Ingredients

butter or olive oil

1 lb ground beef

1/3 green bell pepper, minced

1/2 small yellow onion, minced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp tomato paste

2/3 c ketchup (Whole Foods Organic ketchup is my favorite)

1/3 c water

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tsp worcestershire sauce

1 tsp liquid aminos or soy sauce

1 tsp sherry (optional)

1 tsp white vinegar

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

For serving: Buns and American cheese

Instructions

  1. Chop the vegetables.
  2. Mix tomato paste with water until smooth. Add other sauce ingredients and mix again.
  3. Heat skillet over medium.
  4. Add butter/olive oil, bell pepper, and onions.
  5. Saute for 5-7 minutes, until onions are semi-translucent.
  6. Add the garlic and cook 2 minutes. Push the veggies to the side.
  7. Add a little extra butter/olive oil, if needed. Add ground beef. Sprinkle with the 1/2 tsp salt.
  8. Increase heat to medium-high and brown the beef. Chop in to small pieces. Drain extra fat, if necessary.
  9. Stir the meat and veggies together. Add the sauce.
  10. Cook until bubbling and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
  11. Serve on buns, with American cheese if desired.
